At Cannes Film Festival, Australian actor Guy Pearce made a subtle yet significant political statement by wearing a Palestinian flag pin and a bracelet in Palestinian colors. However, when Vanity Fair France published a photo of Pearce, the pin had been photoshopped out, sparking widespread outrage and accusations of censorship.
Egyptian journalist Ahmed Hathout criticized the magazine, highlighting the inconsistency of editing out the pin while leaving the bracelet untouched.
Vanity Fair issued an apology, attributing the alteration to an editing mistake, but many remain unconvinced.
Pearce’s support for Palestinian rights is well-documented. He has previously advocated for a boycott of Puma due to its sponsorship of the Israeli Football Association, reinforcing his commitment to the cause.
