HerStory Films, the first film company dedicated to producing and developing works by female filmmakers in the Arab World, proudly announces its official launch.
Born in Egypt, this groundbreaking venture is a partnership between publishing veteran and entrepreneur May Abdel Asim and acclaimed superstar Mona Zaki. HerStory Films aims to redefine the narrative for female filmmakers in the region and share Arab women’s stories with the world, amplifying their voices and fostering a more inclusive film industry.
With a deep commitment to promoting gender equality and empowering women in cinema, HerStory Films is set to revolutionise the industry landscape in the Arab World.
At the heart of HerStory Films’ launch is the introduction of a Film Incubator, in cooperation with the Embassy of the Netherlands in Egypt, that will nurture and support emerging female filmmakers. Over three years, the Film Incubator will develop and produce a total of six short films based on two incubator editions, each showcasing the unique perspectives and stories of Arab women.
This initiative is made possible through funding from the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Egypt, who share HerStory Films’ vision of empowering women and promoting cultural diversity through the medium of film. At this very moment, 20 film projects have been selected and will enter the incubator to be developed with 3 short films being produced.
H.E. Peter Mollema, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Egypt commended the launch of HerStory Films, stating,
“We are honored to support HerStory Films in their mission to empower female filmmakers in the Arab World. We believe in the importance of equal opportunities and representation in the film industry. This collaboration will not only elevate the voices of Arab women but also foster cross-cultural understanding and appreciation. We look forward to witnessing the impact of HerStory Films and the stories that will captivate audiences worldwide.”
May Abdel Asim, Founder and CEO, added,
“Our vision for HerStory Films is to create a vibrant and inclusive film community that nurtures the talents of female filmmakers. We are dedicated to providing opportunities, breaking down barriers, and promoting gender equality in the industry. This is just the beginning of an exciting journey, and we can’t wait to see the incredible stories that will emerge from this collaboration.”
Mona Zaki, co-founder of HerStory Films, expressed her excitement about this groundbreaking venture, stating,
“I am thrilled to be a part of HerStory Films and to contribute to the empowerment of women in the Arab film industry. We have an abundance of talent waiting to be discovered, and I am confident that through HerStory Films, we will bring these diverse stories to the world.”
