On Saturday, May 1st, 2021, a 13-year-old girl, Lillie Sabry, took to social media to share her story about getting assaulted in broad daylight in the streets of Cairo.
According to Lillie, she was going for a run with her friend Habiba at 10 AM in a street in the Dokki area.
During their run, two middle-aged men on a motorcycle approached the girl and yelled at them, “We’re in Ramadan,” and then cussed them and physically assault them.
احنا في رمضان يا ولاد القحابي
Lillie told us about the incident:
Before I could answer or talk back their cussing, the man in the back slapped my arm so hard; it turned red. The slap even left a mark on my shoulder.
As of now, Lillie is trying to find any security footage of the incident from the shops at the street she was in, and even though she’s only 13 years old, she is adamant about not letting the incident go without justice.
“I would love to take legal action because I have never in my life been so disrespected by any man before. I am 13 years old, but I will not sit here and tolerate the lack of education.”
If you or someone you know have been a victim of sexual harassment or assault in Egypt, we urge you to report to the police as soon as you can.
