Amir El-Masry, the Egyptian-British award-winning actor, is set to take part in the 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival with the new film Club Zero by director Jessica Hausner. The festival is scheduled to be held from 16 to 27 May.
About the film Club Zero
The film follows Miss Novak, who has recently joined the faculty of an esteemed international boarding school to impart her knowledge on the merits of conscious eating. She advocates for the idea that reducing one’s food intake can lead to a healthier lifestyle.
Despite her efforts, her colleagues are initially slow to catch on to the benefits of her approach. However, as time progresses and parents begin to take notice, Miss Novak’s Club Zero gains momentum and becomes a reality.
CLUB ZERO, the latest offering from celebrated Austrian filmmaker Jessica Hausner, was shot in Oxford, UK and Austria. This marks Hausner’s sixth feature film, following her critically acclaimed previous work, Little Joe, which was screened in competition at Cannes in 2019 and earned Emily Beecham the Best Actress award.
The film is produced by Bruno Wagner, Philippe Bober, Mike Goodridge, and Johannes Schubert. Amir El-Masry at Cannes Film Festival
This marks the second participation of star Amir El-Masry in the Cannes Film Festival, since his film Limbo which received wide success and positive critical acclaim ahead of the film’s tour in prestigious film festivals around the world such as BFI London Film Festival, Cairo International Film Festival and Filmfest München.
The film Club Zero by director Jessica Hausner has been selected to be screened at the Cannes Film Festival. El-Masry’s participation in the film is highly anticipated.
Awards and Nominations
At the Cairo International Film Festival (CIFF), El-Masry competed with his film Limbo and received three awards, including the Golden Pyramid for Best Film Award. In addition, Limbo took part in the Cannes Film Festival. Limbo toured international film festivals and received several awards and nominations, most importantly; the Best Director and Best Writer awards to Ben Sharrock and the Best Actor award to Amir El-Masry at the BAFTA Scotland Awards. In 2021, Limbo was nominated for the Outstanding British Film of the Year award at the BAFTA Film Awards.
Amir El-Masry’s Career
Born in Cairo and raised in London, Amir El-Masry has been a part of the entertainment industry for several years. He has had leading roles in successful Egyptian films such as Ramadan Mabrouk Abul-Alamein Hamouda and El-Talatah Yishtaghaloonha. However, his breakout role came when he took part in Woody Harrelson’s American film Lost in London, and the critically acclaimed BAFTA nominated miniseries The State.
In 2018, El-Masry played the lead role in The Arabian Warrior film, which is the first American/Saudi feature-length film. He also participated in Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker.
Amir El-Masry’s Recent Works
Amir El-Masry has been busy with several projects in recent times. He played the role of the Egyptian businessman, Mohamed Al-Fayed at an early age in the highly acclaimed American drama, The Crown. He also portrayed the character of an Egyptian doctor during World War II in the British series SAS Rogue Heroes. El-Masry starred in the musical series Magnouna Bik (Crazy About You) which topped Shahid VIP’s watching lists on the platform. His latest film #Gawwezni was released in theaters throughout the Arab world.
Amir El-Masry in The One and The Choice 3: The Decision
El-Masry starred in The One series, which is currently airing on Netflix. During the Ramadan season 2022, he took part in the TV drama The Choice 3: The Decision, which is considered as the most successful TV series within the Ramadan race.
El-Masry’s Success in Egyptian Cinema
El-Masry has been a part of several successful Egyptian films. His leading roles in Ramadan Mabrouk Abul-Alamein Hamouda and El-Talatah Yishtaghaloonha were highly praised. He also competed in the Egyptian box office with the film Ritsa.
