The International Federation of Film Critics, commonly known as FIPRESCI, has announced the election of a new board of directors, with the Egyptian critic Ahmed Shawky taking the helm as president.
This significant appointment is set for a two-year term, with the possibility of renewal for an additional two years. The elections took place during the General Assembly of FIPRESCI in the Hungarian city of Miskolc.
This event was hosted by the 19th edition of the Cinefest, which ran from September 1 to 9. Notably, this marks the first time in the history of the federation, which was established in 1925, that its president has been elected from outside Europe and the United States.
Shawky’s leadership will coincide with FIPRESCI’s centennial celebrations in 2025. The newly elected board of FIPRESCI comprises Ahmed Shawky as president, with two vice-presidents: Ukrainian critic Elena Rubashevska and Italian critic Paola Casella.
Additionally, German critic Klaus Eder continues his role as the General Secretary, while Alin Tasciyan from Turkey serves as the Deputy General Secretary. FIPRESCI stands as a global institution that brings together film critics from all over the world. It boasts a membership of over 2,500 critics, divided among members from 49 countries and individual critics from nations without a critics’ union.
In Egypt, the federation is represented by the Egyptian Film Critics Association. Egypt holds the distinction of being the first Arab and African country to join FIPRESCI, with its association joining immediately upon its establishment in 1972.
Throughout the year, FIPRESCI organizes various activities, including critics’ juries at more than 80 film festivals worldwide, including all major festivals. They also present an annual award for the best film of the year during the opening of the San Sebastian Film Festival, along with numerous seminars and regular film screenings.
FIPRESCI’s membership includes three Arab countries: Egypt, Tunisia, and Morocco.
Ahmed Shawky is a renowned Egyptian film critic and writer. He currently holds the position of Development Director for the Middle East on the “Viu” platform.
Shawky has authored eight specialized books on Egyptian cinema. He is also the president of the Egyptian Film Critics Association and the director of El Gouna’s starting point, as well as the development and co-production program for the El Gouna Film Festival.
One of his most notable roles was at the Cannes Film Festival, where Shawky chaired the jury of the International Federation of Film Critics for its 75th edition in 2022.
